Cold

2020

biro, acrylic and gouache on paper

29.7 x 42cm

This work consists of two images juxtaposed with one another. In the foreground we have a portrait of my partner, rugged up in a hoodie during Winter 2020. In the background is the outline of the greater Melbourne area. In this work I wanted to express our transition to the colder climate, having moved to Melbourne in late 2019. Our sense of space and comfort was drastically affected by Stage 4 lockdown which made our life here feel like we were hibernating from the outside world, tucked inside our houses trying to rug up to stay warm and safe, missing home and freedom in Sydney. Lockdown created a deep sense of introspection and curiosity as we were unfamiliar with our local surroundings beyond the 5km radius.

I am a second year student at RMIT studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in painting. My general interest revolves around our perspective of the world around us and our relationship to nature.
