Beach

2020

pigment print

Gazing out to sea, frozen in time as the city skyline stretches into the distance. "Beach" presents the literal feelings of solitude and alienation caused by the COVID19 pandemic, in a uniquely Melbourne fashion. Illustrating the isolated aspect of the lockdown, and exaggerating the mandatory masks - this photograph works to draw parallels between a post-apocalyptic nightmare, and the reality that was our stage four lockdown. The iconic Brighton bathing boxes, almost unrecognisable because of the emptiness of the beachscape. Taken from a larger body of work that addresses mental health and coping strategies through COVID, "Beach" serves as a reminder to look for the beauty in the vernacular. Sometimes the finding of humour in a moment is all it takes to make it through the day.

Hannah Phemister is working to capture the beauty of the surrounding world, through scenes, single moments, and abstract interpretations. Her photographs are bright and rich, hiding a deeper meaning beneath their surface. Exploring themes from consumption to mental health, her work uses aesthetics as a communicative technique, to win over audiences and elevate her message. Influenced by her creative upbringing, Hannah holds an appreciation for art in many forms: coming from a family of a sculptor father, mixed media artist mother, and musician brother. She views her photography as a means of self-expression and a therapeutic outlet.
