All Masked Up

2020

Graphite on paper, 14 x 18 cm

The source image of this drawing was originally a photograph of myself in a car with my mask on. I took a photo because I had realised that I, like so many other people, had gotten to the point where not wearing a mask felt stranger than actually wearing one. This situation of being all alone in a car and wearing a mask at first appeared humorous, yet the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous is seamed. There are so many things that have drastically changed over the past year due to COVID-19, with masks being one of the most visually noticeable, and this was just one of the moments that amazed me how much the world can change in such a short period of time, for both better and worse.

Holly Cook is a Melbourne based artist and current Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) student at RMIT. Working in a range of oil paints, watercolours and drawing materials, she creates pieces centring around self-portraiture and the lived experiences of a student confronting events of the 21st century. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, her work often incorporates surrealistic elements to contrast the sometimes stark realities of life.
