Distance

2020

oil on canvas

8x10”

My Oil Painting 'Distance' represents the conflicting need for one's own space as subsequently one can feel consumed by love, hence depicting the melting of a couple clinging to one another. Relationships during lockdown can be met with tension, disparity, longing and loneliness. Co-dependency can arise and so too, the danger of losing oneself in another. There is also the need for touch, emotional intimacy and embracing vulnerability. These beautiful aspects of connection to another which the pandemic proved we overlooked. The irony of creating 'Distance' between two souls who don't dare separate, the confiding in one another and awareness of one's mental health during a time where no one is entirely sure of how far we've come and how much further we've to go. The figures are locked in a moment, communicating our basic instinctual need to be held with understanding.

I am an emerging artist whose primary practice is Oil Painting. I will be returning to study in hopes of graduating with a BA Fine Art (Honours) in 2021. I have always had an affinity for painting from a young age, particularly portraiture. My eagerness to convey people with a capacity of recognising their emotion and depicting it through my own. Sensitivity and perception is what drives my brushwork to create works that reflect the times and situations from an individual standpoint, that may be related to as a whole.
