The COVID-19 pandemic and the strict Melbourne lockdowns has added to the environmental issue in the production of many single-use materials, boxes, packaging, masks to name a few. The blue mask collection started from my families use and how quickly they amounted to a significant pile of waste. There are several narratives that can be taken from this work, the feeling of being trapped, and for a lot of people isolated in this uncertain time. Breath being caught in the mask, keeping pathogens inside but also keeping them out. The gabion cage keeps them trapped, locking up this period of time in a physical object. When I look at this piece, I think of the thousands who have lost their lives in this pandemic and all the frontline workers who have worked so hard to keep us healthy and safe. The blue mask is now a universally recognised symbol of Covid-19, a representation of a pandemic none of us will forget and nor should we.

Painting is my primary practice. However I am constantly exploring new mediums, materials and subject matter. Beeswax is one of those mediums that's quite versatile, by which I can coat, submerge, drip and paint objects with, adding or subtracting to the narrative of work. I have a strong interest in our physical environment that surrounds us whether that is our home or further afield, urban or rural. How this affects us physically and mentally, how observant we are or not.
