This iPhone image captures my family ‘Zoom’ birthday party in mid-2020. This sweet moment happened when my Mum tried to show my birthday cake to our virtual dinner party guests, only for the fruit to slide off the cake. A composition of deconstructed cake, can’t quite take the family away from the art I suppose. The thought of it still makes us all chuckle. For me, this is a moment of gratitude. Although we are thousands of kilometers away and over a year apart - we are the lucky ones who got to video chat and laugh about cake.
Miranda Smith is a Hong Kong and Melbourne based light artist returning to the School of Art for honours. Smith’s practice is driven by a fascination with non-conscious experience. She takes inspiration from the everyday and the celestial, reinterpreting phenomena into romantised and embodied art experiences.
