When I am among the trees #7

2020

ink on paper

This drawing is one of a series made in 2020 which endeavoured to capture the intentions of poet Mary Oliver as expressed in her poem, When I am Among the trees 2008. Acting as a curative to the many pressures placed on us in our modern lives, not least during the difficulties of 2020, Oliver’s poem encourages us to look to nature and find inspiration there, where the trees of all varieties live in harmony and peace. In nature we may pause, experience hope, and recall who we really want to be.

With a quiet respect for nature and the use of materials possessed of an honest simplicity and authenticity, my practice seeks to attain a quiet sense of harmony through the beauty of imperfection. With thoughtful attention to detail, surface and scale, shaping slowly by hand, material into object.
